Honorary Doctorates

An Honorary Doctorate is one type of Honorary Award. Honorary Awards are prestigious honours that are intended to recognise substantial achievements or contribution by individuals.

Each of the Honorary Doctorates has a different focus, but all are of equal status.

The criteria for the award of Honorary Doctor of the University are:

  1. exceptional service to the University, usually over a sustained period of time; and
  2. exceptional record of service to professional and/or public life.

The criteria for the award of Honorary Doctor of Letters are:

  1. distinguished contribution to an academic discipline or field of endeavor relating to humanities and social sciences; and
  2. exceptional record of service to professional and/or public life.

The criteria for the award of Honorary Doctor of Science are:

  1. distinguished contribution to an academic discipline or field of endeavor, relating to the physical sciences or health sciences; and
  2. exceptional record of service to professional and/or public life.
