Graduate School of Business Alumni Chapter

President's welcome

Image of people working with computerWelcome to our new Curtin Graduate School of Business (GSB) Alumni Chapter website! The new website and (and the soon to be launched Curtin alumni online community) comes at an exciting time for our chapter with us successfully delivering many new events and activities via a very capable committee. The committee currently comprises 17 talented professionals from a broad spectrum of graduates, students and staff from the GSB.

The main focus of our business planning framework is:

“To grow the GSB alumni involvement and reputation for the benefit of all alumni and the GSB.”

All of our activities are therefore designed to meet this focus and our overarching theme of “Growing Valuable Connections.” With this in mind, we currently deliver a program of events and services that facilitate significant professional and social networking opportunities with like-minded professionals, together with opportunities for career advancement and life-long learning.

The chapter is working to raise the profile of the Curtin Graduate School of Business and our alumni in the business community to increase awareness of the quality of Curtin GSB graduates to enhance the value of all GSB qualifications.  All graduates, students and staff are welcome and encouraged to participate in our activities.

We have recently held a comedy Christmas debate, a Chinese New Year Paralympic Icebreaker and a barbecue and sailing day at South Perth. In addition, we are currently planning our activities for the coming months.  Why not enjoy the benefits of staying involved with the GSB once your studies are completed by coming along to our next event to see old friends again and meet some new ones?

The new net community online portal should significantly simplify communications with our members when it is launched and offer new routes and methods not yet explored.  If you are interested in participating in our alumni network then you must keep us advised of your postal and email address (most events and activities are promoted by email). To update your contact details please complete the update your details form online.

I look forward to meeting you at one of our future events or speaking to you again or even welcoming you onto the committee.

Yours faithfully,
Michael Starling

Chinese New Year Icebreaker - Friday 29 February 2008
The Curtin GSB alumni chapter celebrated the start of the academic year with a Chinese New Year Icebreaker, at the GSB on 29 February 2008. The Icebreaker included two guest speakers, Katrina Porter, the current S7 200 metre backstroke world record holder, and her coach Mel Tantrum. Katrina and Mel shared their thoughts on motivation and goal setting. This event has been kindly sponsored by the Integrated Group, our Silver (Event) Sponsor, and our Gold Sponsors, William Buck. Additional fundraising was done on the night to support the paralympic campaign.

Sailing Day and Barbecue - Sunday 30th March
The Chapter recently held the Inaugural Curtin GSB Alumni Chapter Sailing Day and Barbecue. This casual event took place on Sunday 30 March 2008 on the South Perth foreshore and was a great success, enjoyed by all who attended (although the America’s Cup may be safe in Switzerland!) A summary report and photos of the prize winners will be uploaded shortly.

Get involved

Events attendance

To ensure you receive details of all upcoming Curtin GSB Alumni Chapter events and services, please ensure your contact details are up to date.

Committee membership

The Chapter is always looking for enthusiastic, passionate, and energetic alumni, students and staff to contribute to the main committee affairs and to specific project teams. There are many varied opportunities to become more involved without too much effort. If you are interested in becoming involved, please contact the Office of Alumni Relations or contact Michael Starling, President, directly on mobile/cell +61 (0)421 793 950.

Mentoring

We are particularly interested in hearing from you if you are interested in helping to set up a mentoring program for the students and alumni of the GSB or have experience with a similar program.

Regional centres

We are trying to establish regional centres throughout Australia and overseas in the main cities our alumni live and work in. We are fortunate to already have three volunteers but are interested in hearing from others to help coordinate events in these and other cities. We would even love to hear from you if you are just interested in meeting other alumni and attending an occasional event.

Student assignments

There may be opportunities for current students to use their assignments to help us develop our processes, structures and overall capabilities. Please contact us if you are planning projects in business process improvement, marketing, budget planning or event management or have other ideas of your own.

Alumni showcase

It is important for us to showcase our successful alumni and we would be delighted to hear from you (or a friend) if you are a “high achiever” and would be happy to be included in a “hall-of-fame” like arrangement.

Call for sponsors

We are always looking for new sponsors! Our fundraising policy is aimed at promoting our alumni who have established themselves in a small to medium enterprise in any sector.  We have some fantastic opportunities for events in the near future and would also be interested in speaking to other organisations which are a good “fit” with us.
